Entering the Professional World for the First Time

By Braylyn Bruno, English and Public Relations Major / McAnulty Academic Internship

This school year has started off a bit differently than last year, with classes being in person and life starting to feel familiar once again. I have a lot to look forward to academically this semester, as I have started my very first internship! The past few weeks have been mostly planning and figuring out what duties I will have as the Marketing and Communications Intern for Duquesne’s English Department. Some of the things I will be responsible for this semester are developing social media campaigns on the English Department’s Instagram stories, assisting in alumni outreach, and creating materials to help recruit future Dukes to the program.

As my internship begins, I have been preparing to launch my first Instagram campaign using the Instagram stories feature. As a Strategic Public Relations and Advertising major, I have always known my job would involve directing social media campaigns. However, there is a big difference between professional and personal social media posts. When representing an organization, it is important that the posts are not only professional but pleasing to the eye in the best way possible. To say I was underprepared for the time that goes into perfecting a social media template is an understatement. These are the moments when as a student I am grateful to have an internship because I know that I will only continue to be surprised as the year goes on, but it is all part of the learning process. I’m looking forward to seeing what this semester has in store for me and how much I will learn from my experiences.
